On 16 Oct 2024, we had the honor of assisting the City of Pawtucket in bringing home Civil War Veteran Hospital Steward Byron Johnson of the 11th Rhode Island Volunteers. Enlisting at 18 in the Fall of 1862, his enlistment ended in July of 1863 and he returned home to Pawtucket. He eventually moved to Seattle, Washington where he died in 1913 from stomach cancer. Having never married, nor having had any children, his cremains were left unclaimed for over 100 years until the Missing in America Project reached out to the city in hopes to bring him home. After a long process, with the help of many people and organizations, Byron was finally laid to rest next to his parents and other family members! Br. Ben Frail, PDC had the distinct honor of presenting Byron’s burial flag to the First Lady of Pawtucket, Mrs. Laureen Grebien. A huge thank you to everyone who was there, and to all that helped bring Byron home!
