Rhode Island Department

Lest we Forget…

Welcome to the Rhode Island Department, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. We invite you to explore our site to discover the rich history of our Order, learn about our efforts in historic and cultural preservation and education, and our unswerving commitment to perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and the brave Union Soldiers who fought to save the Nation in the American Civil War, 1861-1865.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War are charged, as one of our most sacred duties, to keep Memorial Day, as established by the Grand Army of the Republic in 1868, in order to “keep green the memory” of the sacrifice of men of the Union Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Revenue Cutter Service who never came home from the rebellion, and later of all U.S. Soldiers who have given their lives in the defense of freedom.
